Damp fog billowed out from the waves of the lake. It rolled over the waist high grasses in long undulating lines. Kiko had stopped her nightly roaming to watch it fill up the meadow. Her world was quiet again, all the usual jabber of birds and creatures silenced by the fog.
She leaned back against the mighty trunk of a ancient elm tree, stretched her hands above her head and then leaped up to catch the nearest branch. From that branch she leaped to the next, before settling back down inside the thicker part of the leaves.
She was not easily seen, though she had no intention of actually hiding. She was only getting higher to watch the fog.

There was a soft rustle in the branches above and behind her, like a sudden, localised wind.
"Good evening," came Kat's soft, liltingly accented voice. She was hanging upside down by what appeared to be her tail, just behind and to one side of Kiko.
Kiko had enough presence of mind not to fall out of the tree. But, her heartbeat thudded into her throat. For a second, and it was only that, a second she was transported back East and her childhood. It was not a happy time.
She forced her breath out of her nose and looked at the cat girl girl dangling upside down.
Had I known you were in the tree I would have chosen another. Do you always greet people this way?

...circumstances like this? You mean upside down? From what I've seen it appears to be a regular thing. Though, at least I didn't get a "BANG!"
Kiko had managed to get her breath back under control, and as a consequence her voice was softer. She had also banished the memory back into the dark. Katerina was not one of the children that had chased her out of the village.

Kat gave that low, melodious giggle again, suddenly sounding far younger than she even appeared.
She shook her head, "no, up trees, at night. I spend a lot of my time up high like this. I like it. You can see more of what's coming, and usually in places like this the view is simply prettier."
Kiko's mouth turned up. The giggle was infectious, and the words even moreso, had she just not thought the exact same thing? Kiko glanced back out to the fog. The grass had all but disappeared, along with the lake. In fact, the way the fog was moving, if they stayed in the tree very much longer they might not even be able to see the ground.
... mmh. I wouldn't imagine the view from the rafters of a tavern to be full of anything but dust and smoke. So... what were you looking at up there?

"Mostly thinking, actually. Thinking about where I would make my home around here. I don't have the money to stay in town, though I did find a nice, comfortable sheltered spot near a warm chimneypot last night."
She had no desire to live in town, at all. She would be perfectly happy to spend her time here. Okay, not specifically in this tree, but this wide open area. Town was too loud, too... well too everything.
So, you are planning on staying in Wistvale?

"Oh there's far too much opportunity here for me to move on just yet. Besides, I've only just arrived. I've wanted to go travelling without it being a job for some time."
Kiko nodded at that, her eyes distant. She'd made it to Wistvale on the heels of a job herself, and lacking any money for food or lodging. She had been lucky.
Well, this certainly seems like the place everyone comes for adventure.

Kiko looked at Kat again. That was surprising coming from her, really. The attitude in the tavern did not seem to jive with her desire to stay away from adventure. Kiga was not someone she would pick to taunt... much.
You're an odd one Kat.
Kiko's voice held no tone of offense just fact.

Kiko made no move to switch her position, and sure enough the fog had managed to make it through the trees, turning the elm's canopy into a little forest of gray and green. She was quite sure Kat was capable of everything she said, and even if she had not been it was safer to assume so until revealed otherwise.
Kiko was a wary soul. Nevertheless, the cat girl seemed cheerful enough, and despite her sneaky greeting less intrusive than most, maybe it was the quiet, or the fog.
I was born a long way away from here.
