Well firstly as always, I would like to say I am a HUGE fan of Dungeons and Dragons. Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson were legends in my world, I not only recall playing this and that D&D but actually read some of Gary's novels as a kid.
I don't personally think a Dungeons & Dragons play by post RPG would be entirely successful due to the complexities of their system, but I like to think of The Menagerie as an homage to the precedents that they have set.
If you have fond memories of D&D, I'd love to hear about them.
My very first experience with D&D involved an extremely creative and fluid DM. We played in a basic Tolkienesk fantasy setting but with a fun scifi twist. A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, the evil lord Darth Vader's tie fighter went spiraling off into space (www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8_OcN5FXmg skip to 1:05). It just so happened that he fell into a worm hole that crashed him on a strange and primal planet. Without technology and with only the Force and the the force of his will, Darth Vader managed to build a new empire and quickly took dominion over much of the known world. If he couldn't rule the universe yet, then he'd at least rule this puny planet. We didn't learn these cool tidbits until the end. We, the players, figured out he was Darth Vader fairly easily (DM used a sound board to get him to talk). It was learning how to stop him and his plans that became difficult. At one point we received some very epic weaponry. My weapon was--well, as far as I could tell a magical flaming sword. It was just a hilt until I brandished it, then a fiery blade shot out of it! A fire which I later discovered could cut through almost anything! It turned out I had actually been using Vader's light saber! One half-elf actually used the force on a couple occasions--however, my character never witnessed that. It was definitely epic! A very fun and welcome first impression to D&D!
Wow, I can say that I have never known anyone to play a SW D&D and I think that's fantastic! I've always been a huge fan of the golden rule - screw the rules! Make it fun!
That sounds Awesome. My only PBP D&D game was one that had me as the Elf sorcereress. My job was to make absolutely sure that everything on the field (Including my team of three Orcs) was on fire. They played up the whole on fire thing though, so I really just had to scorch a few thousand blades of grass and some arrows.
Me "So, what's a monk?" Friend 1 "You basically punch things really hard." Me "...I want to play a monk with no arms." Friend "...can he do that?" DM "I think he can."

And that's how I began my adventures.
YOU, my friend, are epic.
I'm about to roleplay a monk in Pathfinder who has taken an oath not to kill--anything. Not even goblins or spiders. I intend to try grappling! >

Ahh D&D. The first true love of my young teenage life.
Seriously. Boyfriend took me to a game. I created a Arthurian type knight everyone wanted to talk to me, or offer advice, books, whatever I needed. Boyfriend and I finally went home. He stopped talking to me and I kept going back to the game every Thursday night without him. These days I still play table top games, but my old core of roleplaying friends are scattered all over the world.
