Wistvale.
What was once a run down frontier town, a town of legendary infamy at the end of nowhere, is no longer.
In it's place stands a proud town, a secure town, an example to all. Several years of unwavering determination, commitment and labour by it's citizens has seen the shady shanty town become something better. A hub of commerce, trade and a shining example of sustainable living, Wistvale is home to a proud populace of an almost unimaginable mix of origins.
Where crime was once treated with complacence, where the rabble and the rotten ruled the streets, now are schools, libraries, parks... buildings as proud as the people who built them. The lake that once washed at it's southern shore is now joined with the great inland sea, making it a key locale for foreign trade and diplomacy. A grand place in a modest fashion, a good place.
It has it's troubles like any other town, it has it's unsavoury elements as does anywhere - but it is carefully watched, controlled and kept in it's place by a loyal town guard which serves the people with steadfast determination and unquestionable loyalty to the service of the citizenry.
The people rule the town of Wistvale, those who have earned the right to have a say, those with lifetimes and generations invested in it's future. Those who made it the home it is today. With careful consideration, the town has become something new - a community that lives in balance with the natural world around it, that leads the way in conservative industry and art, renewable agriculture and education.
It holds no power over any but it's own, it practices fair diplomacy and cooperates in the interest of mutual benefit with it's far off neighbours, it thrives in peace.
But the world is still a cruel, a harsh reality.
Wistvale serves as a beacon of hope in a dangerous world. From this town which itself is a safe haven, the battle is fought for righteousness, for equality, for safety and safe passage of those who roam the lands. The right to live and let live. Those who seek sanctuary may find it here. Those with untoward intentions will find tolerance comes at a closely-watched price.
Perhaps you'll find what it is you seek here stranger. Perhaps.

The Menagerie is a mostly 'free role play' in which we don't use complicated statistics and combat systems to enjoy role playing. We have character 'talents' which is a measure of your character's skill and their potential when role playing and that's about it. We consider it just enough structure to keep things both modest and interesting.
The setting for the Menagerie is 'High Fantasy' which is best compared to Tolkien's works. Our adventurers share a desire for gold, glory, battle and/or personal accomplishments. All adventure focuses around the tiny town of Wistvale, a once small town which has seen huge growth in the past several years.
Technologically speaking, magic is rampant and steam power has not been invented as yet. The height of machinery is gnomish clockwork, ticking and whirring contraptions with a knack for spectacular failure.
Science is predominantly alchemy and is more magic than it is not.
The world is diverse, undefined and left largely to the character's and GM's imagination.
