(Hmm. That may make something a little more difficult but okay.)
When Skul puts out his light he starts to feel a bit better and can relax from the exertion.
As Skul's vision adjusts, he begins to see a very dim layer of glowing dust had collected on some parts of the walls and floors. It creates enough light for Skul to stumble around and not kill himself.
Skul advanced cautiously down the stairs, reasoning he could relight his fire if he needed to. How far did the tunnel go, and how many paths did it split into? And was the dust disturbed in any way that would show that someone passed?
Of all the graveyards in all the towns in all the world, she had to walk into mine.

He keeps going. How far down does it go? And why aren't there any signs of someone being down here? Maybe if it was long enough ago they would have been covered up, but Skul wasn't so sure.

When Skul reaches Level 3, the large mining room isn't quite identical to the rooms above it. The minecart tracks are a bit twisted and malformed. The walls are missing chunks and the tunnels are dug more crudely, with many sharp edges shorn right off.

At Level 4 the tracks are barely attached to the floor anymore. The tunnels curve up and down in strange directions. A minecart can be seen totally flattened onto the floor with what appears to be a large footprint.
Skul can hear a low sound coming from the ground below him. It sounds a bit like a rolling grumbling grating sound.
A set of stairs leads down.

Level 5 is heavily destroyed and torn apart. There are no minecart tracks. The glowing dust down here seems a little less dense, like it was more recently disturbed. Three very large rough hewn tunnels have been dug into the floor of the main mining room on this level. Boulders and rubble are strewn about the room.
The sound has gotten louder.
There are no stairs down.

Skul growls a little and carefully jumps into the tunnel. He'd figure out how to get back out later. He puts out his light in order to not broadcast his presence and stands still, half crouched, waiting for anything to come at him.

Skul follows the tunnel down deep, far beyond the sensible limits of the mine. The noise separates into a periodic stone grinding and smashing noise and a low growling and rumbling noise.
The tunnel twists and turns and the dust becomes less and less settled down. Skul finds a few gigantic footprints in the dust leading further into the tunnel.
As he turns a corner, the great hulking back of a giant beast is visible at the end of the tunnel. The beast is grabbing the solid stone walls of the tunnel and pulling out boulders with its bare hands.
"uuuuuuurrrrrrrrrgghh...."

Skul hesitated. The mage he talked to earlier had said he couldn't reason with the golem, but maybe it knew where the lantern was...he had to try. He lit a small fire in his hand and cleared his throat.
Excuse me.
