The canine leads Skulduggery through the forest without saying anything more. The beast climbs effortlessly over fallen trees and leaps over gullies. At times Skul loses sight of the canine until it turns and the orange eyes stare back at him.
They come to a point where a hut is only a little ways away. Skul can just make out the glow of a fire and the small bit of smoke rising from the chimney.
(ignore hagrid and company )
A small path can barely be made out with the help of the moon. The wolf turns towards Skul and his eyes pierce through the darkness.
I GO NO FURTHER. MY LAND ENDS HERE. THE MAN IN THAT DWELLING MAY BE ABLE TO GUIDE YOU FURTHER. HE SEEMS MORE POWERFUL THAN A NORMAL MAN THOUGH. IT MAY BEHOOVE YOU TO PASS HIM BY.
The dark wolf begins to leave Skul at a slow pace but accelerates to a bounding gallop into the distance.

The wolf was gone before he could finish. Skul sighed and cautiously approached the door. He was told the man had died; had he misunderstood the wolf? Strange. He rapped on the door twice with his knuckles.
Of all the graveyards in all the towns in all the world, she had to walk into mine.

The door opens a few inches. A chain blocks the door from opening all the way. Skul can see an old man with wiry gray hair and well-wron clothes through the crack.

"You must have come to my hut in the middle of the forest because you heard fantastical stories of my potions skills. Well, I haven't made a single potion in years. So, you're out of luck buddy."
I didn't come here for potions. I'm here because I want to know about the mine near here. A man went in with an artifact I'm looking for, a lantern. You know anything about it? He paused again.
If you tell me what you know, I'll leave you alone.
Of all the graveyards in all the towns in all the world, she had to walk into mine.

Woah, woah, woah. Skul shakes his head and puts his hands up defensively.
I don't know anything about that. I'm not here about any monster or about anyone's death. I'm a treasure hunter, and I'm just looking for the lantern. What you do in your own time is your business.

"Oh trust me I have seen much stranger things, sir. Things that should never have become animated."
The old man leads Skul to a seat near the burning fireplace. It crackles and burns with a slight green tint. The smell of spices fills the small hut.
The walls are lined with dusty shelves filled with bottles of strange liquids and dried herbs. A round wooden table takes up most of the space in the main room and a door leads off the main room to presumably the man's bedroom.
He takes a seat next to Skul.
"You may call me Andromagus. When I was a young apprentice, my grandfather lived in this very house. His skills in magick and powers of the arcane were known far across the land and many took long journeys to see him here. They brought sick and he healed them. The blind could see with his help. The lame could walk after seeing him. The deaf could hear when he applied his magicks.
One day a man came to my grandfather and said he was on a journey to find his brother. The brother had been killed in a cave-in at the nearby mine and he wanted to lay his body to rest in a proper grave. He came here for help and my grandfather told him he could do him one better: reanimation. He said he would loan him a Soul Lantern to transfer the soul of the man's brother to a different body and bring him back to life.
That body would was one of the vilest things a magickian can create: a golem. A beast of clay held together only by a scroll shoved in its mouth. It listens to the commands of its master and obeys them mechanically to a tee. If it involves tearing down a solid stone wall, it will be done. No matter how long the task will take, the golem completes it.
My grandfather told him the golem would function as a perfect receptacle for the soul of the man's brother and could also help remove the rubble and debris.
The man took his golem with him and entered the mine. Those who heard of the golem spread the word and no one went in after the man. A golem with a dead master can be dangerous. With no one to modify the directions, the golem will only exact the commands it has already received, even if it means killing countless people. The mine was sealed decades ago with a huge stone.
My grandfather lost all credibility after that. No one more can to him. My whole family was on the brink of poverty. It was all I could do to stop my studies and make a career of making potions based on the small amount of magick I knew."
So, even if I do go in and get the Lantern, the golem is in there, berserk. Is it...intelligent? Or do I have to somehow change its instructions in order to get it to stop?
Of all the graveyards in all the towns in all the world, she had to walk into mine.
