Serenity hugged herself, the weight in her throat returning, she didn't get to share the tale after all. She couldn't cry anymore, even if she wanted too, her mouth was parched and her tears were all dried up. The lady wasn't sure what to say, or what Dolores assumed had happened to her son or how it happened rather.
She tried to say something, opening her mouth a few times but no sounds would come out. She stood just behind Dolores in her chair, staring at the fire as well, not having the courage to look her in the eye, to see a flicker of hate behind them if any at all, anything that would make her heart sink.
There was silence from her for a moment that seemed to expand hours, her mind racing for a way to start, her feet desperately wanting to turn and head to the door. This was a nightmare.
Serenity closed her eyes and shook her head for a moment, fighting with her cowardice. Exhaling slowly, she spoke softly, "I'm sorry, I should have come sooner, much sooner. But I was afraid...afraid to come back and face my father should he catch me..."
She knelt down by the chair and slowly turned her head up towards Dolores, "Afraid to see you and have to tell you that your son was dead, and I couldn't do anything to stop it. The thought of you hating me was unbearable..."
Serenity didn't mean to let that slip, but she was finding it hard in her state to keep some things to herself.
"You don't deserve this...I wish it were me, and he would be here instead of me right now."
