(I am assuming the other pair have made off with him then. I'm not sure where you want this story to go, or what is played out, but I'm happy to wrap up when you think it's appropriate. I'm happy interacting with the children though, as they're the greater dilemma as far as I am concerned.)
Kiga was watching them. He wasn't on guard, but was trying not to seem imposing and not to seem foolish. He wasn't entirely sure what he was doing, or how to go about it; but he was betting that these children, like any other children, were hungry. The difference being that these chidlren were actually hungry. Whether they chose to accept his offer because they wanted something different or because the growl in their belly led them to, made little difference to him.
It would be a start. A first step.
But when the brave one (a hard thing to consider given how utterly unsure the child seemed) stepped forward, then kneeled... and then asked that question...
... Kiga felt a chill wind straight up his spine, curl about his heads and pull his shoulders up, strike a nail into his lower spine and it caused his eyes to water. The question hit like a sledgehammer and caused his heart to lurch and his throat to squeeze. There were no words to answer that because quite simply, it was a question that should never have been asked. No child should ask such a thing, or have the mindset to suggest that they belonged to anyone. And Kiga, above so many others; knew just how that felt.
His mind rolled with the memories, things that were both his pride and his pain and Kiga shook his head as he cleared his throat. He slipped to his knees right before the child, partly because he needed to reach out to them, partly because his knees were weak now. His hand reached for the child, but hesitated, halted before he scare them off by touching them. His voice was now gentler, the sterness crushed from it with the force of hard emotions.
"You don't belong to anyone. Not one of you. But you should belong to a family. Not because a family owns you, but because a family loves you. A family needs you."
Kiha ignored the tear that stole from his eye and rolled down his cheek, making his skin chill in the cool night air. He took a breath in an attempt to press the well of emotion down and instead, managed a smile for the lad.
"So. How about I be your big brother? I never had any brothers of sisters. I think that would be nice. And I know a really swell place that we can all get warm and eat as much as we'd like. Some place safe."
