Tauer almost choked on his food as the first insult was thrown, although the spiciness of the phoenix egg could have been mistaken as the cause. He covered his coughs - and a amused smile - with his napkin. A dinner party wasn't a dinner party until a few verbal punches were thrown. He took a sip of water and composed himself, then inquired into Neko's progress with the first course.
"I've never met a soul who does," Serenity said to Mr. Zechius, "But I imagine you're a proper gentleman as any despite the occupation."
Putting aside her feelings about the phoenix eggs proved to be more difficult than she thought, despite learning that they were stillborn. Serenity reluctantly took her spoon and gave the top of the egg a few taps before cracking it. She collected some of the yolk that seeped out in her scoop and took her first bite.
It was very spicy, more so than she expected and it showed on her startled, if not still relatively composed, face. The Howle swallowed quickly before pointing her chin slightly upward and blew a subtle, gentle stream of air to cool her mouth.
She then took a glass of water almost at the same time as Tauer and drank a sip.
Serenity paid little mind to Mr. Venger and his rude comment, as it was clear Angeline could handle troublesome guests as well as she could criminals.
"I had no idea Wistvale was involved in trade with the Eastern lands," she said to Ms. Buckley, "Or was this a special occasion to help those in need?"
::Neko had no idea about the rarity of Phoenix's or their eggs so she dug in with little to no qualms on the matter. She heard others speak of the spicyness as she tentatively took her first bite...
And found it delicious!! The spicyness reminded her of some of the dishes Jenkins used to make at home and the thoughts warmed her as much as the heat from the egg as she ate it with gusto.
She nodded in response to Tauer's question after she devoured the gooey center of the egg only to see that most of the others had barely touched their own. In her haste, she had missed the insults and assumed the dirty looks were somehow in response to her behavior.
She smiled to the rest of the table and tried to hide her embarassment at her own enthusiasm behind a napkin as she wiped at the corners of her mouth. ::

"Excuse me, have you heard of the Wistvale Fund for Wounded Veterans?"
Tank pours Tauer a glass of a brown liquid from a flask in his cloak.
"You up for a drink of something stronger friend?"
Angeline takes a politely small bite of phoenix egg.
"We do not trade much to the East. This was definitely a special occasion. They have regular monsoons but the flooding this time was described as the worst flooding yet in terms of the amount of water and people affected.
The phoenix eggs are special as well. They were preserved in a mixture of clay, ash, salt, quicklime, and rice hulls for several weeks to several months."
::Neko flinched a bit at the touch, still not used to how things were done here, but tried to hide it as she placed her napkin down and slid the empty dish back a bit from her.
Turning to Ms. Giver, she gave what she hoped was a politely interested face as she shook her head no.
She wanted to make the best impression possible, and so far she felt like she had alot to make up for here. So she intended to listen as much as possible as she awaited the next dish. She just hoped it was something interesting...::

Tauer had secretly been hoping that the drunken dwarf would refrain from including anyone else - especially the demon - in his intoxicated affairs. But alas, the dwarf had poured him a drink and there was nothing Tauer could do but seem interested and be polite.
I'm not much of a drinker, sir. He raised the glass to his nose where he could get a proper whiff of the contents without having to put it past his lips. What exactly is it?
"It's quite amazing how fast Wistvale has progressed over the years. I know men back home who'd find this generous feat difficult to believe, even coming from me." Serenity said which a slight chuckle.
She took smaller bites of the egg, trying to keep composed under the intense heat as she took careful drinks of water.
"I hope you'll forgive me if I seem...discouraged by the wonderful meal. The Phoenix is the sigil of House Ashen of Highever. If Lord Bran ever found that I partook of the egg, stillborn or otherwise, he'd soon turn me to ashes just to see if I rise from them." Serenity said amusingly. She knew Bran would never do that to her. She hoped.

Ms. Giver seemed delighted at Neko. She clapped her hands together quickly.
"Well it's a charity I started for veterans. Did you know veterans have one of the worst unemployment rates in the city? Along with that they receive almost no benefits from the Wistvale government. If you could donate any money to the cause it would be wonderful!"
Tank laughed.
"Ha! It's one of my own secret brews."
He whispered to Tauer.
"The secret ingredient wolfsbane leaves. Calms you down right quick and makes everything fell all nice and easy."
Mrs. Rose Smith was interested in Serenity's mention of Highever.
"Oh, I have a niece in Highever. She studies magickal herbs and plants there."
Angeline raised her voice above the rest of the party.
"On to the next course!"
The butlers brought out more platters and revealed ribeye yakow steaks.
"These are from local farmers so no need for anyone to worry."
Kyle Venger was whispering with Mr. Zechius until his father snapped at him. Mr. Venger grabbed him by the hand and tried to make his voice stern without disturbing the dinner.
"You will NOT go around me for money Kyle. If you need money I will approve it and give it to you or you will WORK for it. This trip to Karlshamn is out of the question unless you earn the money yourself."
::Neko frowned and shook her head sadly. Had she pockets, she would have turned them out to show Ms. Giver she had no money to give unfortunatly. She had a thought to suggest perhaps the veterans would be put to good use in the Sentinels if they were still able enough to work, but she wasn't sure if perhaps that's where they came from to begin with so she let the thought pass.
She instead turned her attention to the next course, and was about to cut into her steak when her attention was drawn to the Venger's seated further arround the table. The glance was quick, and hopfully unnoticed, but what she saw and heard told her alot about the relationship between the family members.
She returned to the steak before her, selfishly glad for the attention drawn away from her, and found the steak to be delicious. ::

As the next course was arriving, Tauer decided to take a very small sip of the "special brew", so as not to come across as a complete fuddy-duddy. Upon overhearing the slight disturbance at the end of the table, the demon found himself glancing in that direction to see a rather stern-looking Mr. Venger.
So, what's your story, sir. The question was directed at the drunken dwarf, since Neko appeared wrapped up in conversation with the woman seated next to her.
"Does she now?" Serenity said with interest as she turned slightly toward Mrs. Rose, "I wouldn't know if she studies at the academy, but I'd love to meet her if our paths happen to cross. What is her name?"
Serenity welcomed the new dish as it was placed in front of her. She thanked the server and cut a small bite from the steak.
The noble barely heard the commotion that was coming from the Vengers, already taken a stand not to bother with them while she was at the table as she knew Angeline would sort them out again if they got out of hand. Serenity was just happy to finally dig into a meal without any sort of restraint placed on her conscious.

"Awh, well. If you ever have any money you want going to the right place I almost always have a cause on my mind. Or if you want to start a fund or a charity I can help you out. I have started quite a few like The Society for Orphan Assistance, the Wistvale Soup Kitchen Supporters and Elise Buckley for the Cure. No need to worry if you don't have the funds today. These causes will stay relevant for a while. Most people come back later with money anyway except for those Vengers. They never give any money to anyone outside their family."
Tank the dwarf takes a swig.
"Well. I'm actually the chief prince maester of the dwarf clan the Aluminum Fists. In my time I will inherit the throne of one thousand spurs which will lift me up to..."
He takes another drink from the flask.
"..reclaim our homeland on the North side of Uptown where the blood of my fathers was spilled. This very house and its neighbors sits upon our rightful land. Everyone living around here patronizes us and doesn't take us seriously. hiccup but I'd gladly get rid of them all if we got our homeland back."
Rose Smith giggles.
"Her name is Violet Jones. What's the academy like? I don't hear much from her these days. Last saw her around Flarbmas and I can't afford to visit her since I've been saving up for my new shop."

Neko smiled and nodded in reply. She would keep that in mind, should she ever have the extra money to donate to a cause.
She turned her attention back to finishing the second course with just a quick glance to Tauer to see how he was handling his neighbor... ::

Tauer had never heard of the Aluminum Fists but refrained from saying so. He knew dwarves were renowned for their bad tempers. A drunk dwarf could be unpredictable.
That sounds too bad. But maybe it would be wise not to speak of getting rid of your host and her neighbors when she has invited you to dine with her. And if you feel this way, why did you come this evening?
The demon began to cut at the yakow steak and gave a complimentary "Mmm".
"It is a school which focuses on tempering the magical abilities of it's students. It is a very proud establishment." Serenity said before taking a drink of water.
"That is the primary goal, but of course there are many fields of study there such as botany and music even. Aside from my training as a mage I studied under an accomplished vocalist and her husband, a pianist."
The noble shined as she remembered the couple fondly and realized she hadn't seen either in a while. Serenity made a note to drop by the next time she traveled to Highever.
"It is a challenging and rewarding experience, I'm sure your niece is enjoying herself."
