Tauer meandered through the dockside marketplace. The overpowering odor of fresh fish assaulted his senses but the hunger in the pit of his stomach continued to make itself known. Having spent the past two months at sea, aboard the Cherry Rose, the last thing Tauer wanted to eat was fish.
But that fruit and veg stand looked appealing...
Tauer stopped a few feet away at the stall adjacent, a tiny stall decorated with flashy - and highly tacky - jewelry; shell necklaces, common gem-filled rings and big, cheap metal earrings. The seller was an old, plump woman with a wide, toothless smile. Tauer feigned interest in the the nicknacks on show while glancing over at the tempting fruit.
A ruby-red apple caught his eye. This shouldn't be too difficult; the crowd was fairly large and the fruit and veg seller was preoccupied with a customer. Tauer focused on the apple while the old jewelry woman waffled on about her wares. Keeping a hand at his side, Tauer reached out for the juicy fruit and something incredible happened; the young man's shadow detached from his feet and snaked it's way over to the apple. Transforming into a dark claw, the shadow snatched up the red fruit and returned to Tauer. With a flicker of a smile, he quickly pocketed the apple and walked away from the jewelry stand, with no word of thanks or goodbye to the old woman.
Tauer passed through the crowd of locals and snuck down a quiet alley to satisfy his appetite. He wasn't proud to have had to resort to stealing but he had no money and nothing to trade.
Well, at least he got away with it.
