Huffing quietly, Marlena crossed her arms over her chest and arched an eyebrow. She spared a glance to Shen before turning sharply, a hand lifting to give a half-hearted wave of dismissal over her shoulder. If the girl did not wish for help, then Marlena had no issues leaving her to whatever fate awaited her, she had offered and it had been rejected. Taking a few steps, the woman stopped long enough to turn her head to look at Shen, a slight smirk on her lips.
The little girl can handle herself apparently. Shall I order drink and find a table, Shen? Or would you like to expend some energy first?
Once again, she shot a look to the thief and girl. She had a feeling that the scene may not have been so clear cut as it seemed and the more she thought about it, the more on edge she felt. Her hands had lowered and her fingers brushed over the grips of her weapons.
Shen starts to grin, quite subtley but it's quite apparent he hasn't taken the thieve's words to heart. He leans on the wall and continues to enjoy his pipe, watching them with a tilted head before he looks back to Marlena with a smile.
"Well I'm quite eager to see what happens next. Besides, it would be unbecoming of our friend here to attempt to harm such a poor, hapless victim. What kind of man might I be were I to turn a blind eye?"
It was apparent by his tone he was quite amused at the going ons, but looked rather comfortable just watching presently.

The girl rolls her eyes and gets hold of her drawstring purse. She tossed the bag a few feet down the alley. When the thief looks at the tossed bag she swings her right leg high enough to point straight up. The back of her knee comes down on the thief's knife arm, breaking some bone. The thief screams as she brings her leg back around and kicks her heal into his face on the way.
The thief collapses onto the ground and tries to stab the girl with his off hand. The knife gets kicked away easily. The girl walks over to her bag and picks it up. She looks back to Marlena and Shen.
Marlena watched the girl and thief, if she wasn't so annoyed by all of the interruptions and distractions she might have actually laughed at the look on the thief's face as the girl kicked him. Instead, her eyes followed Shen as he began to walk, turning and following barely a pace behind him to the tavern door.
She relaxed somewhat as the sounds of the tavern reach her ears and the smell of decent food lingered by the door. Reaching once more for the handle, she silently prayed for no more distractions. She didn't remember it being so darn difficult to find a place to drink before.
Shen reached over her shoulder and took the handle of the door, moving aside as he opened it. He offered a slight smile and a nod of his head. It was apparent she was as bothered as he was by the constant interruptions and he himself was only going to get short of temper should they continue.
"After you, milady."
He smirked a little at his own words, but was doing his best to facilitate them to a quiet table in a quiet corner in order to down some damned alcohol. Now he was rather hungry as well.
Managing a soft laugh, Marlena slipped through the doorway and quickly scanned the room for an empty table, smiling as she caught sight of one in the back, out of the way of the other people that had filled the tavern. Glancing back to him once, she led the way and gestured to a tavern maid along the way.
Lowering herself to a seat, she let out a soft breath of relief at at least having made it this far. Now, only if they could have a drink and meal in peace. Leaning back into the chair, her legs crossed one over the other and her fingers knit together before resting on her knee.
I'll just have wine for the moment... Order what you wish, Shen. I am paying after all.
Shen scuffed at his face and removed his glasses then, folding them neatly and slipping them into an inside coat pocket. He blinked, thought for a moment and then shrugged.
"I will have the same, thank you."
He looked to Marlena as the serving girl left and offered a seemingly pensive smile.
"So. Are you always so troubled walking about town?"
Marlena shook her head gently at his question. No longer tense and annoyed, she calmed and waited patiently for her drink as she watched the man across from her. She returned the smile with one of her own, a little warmer and more relaxed whilst she spoke.
Thankfully, no... It must be something in the water today, I'm usually left well enough alone. I do hope it hasn't dampened your view of Wistvale, though. It's a surprisingly charming place, with some rather... Interesting, characters. But I'm sure you'll bump into them if you intend to stick around.
Shen smiled when the wine arrived, then sampled it in a formal manner before approving and taking the liberty of pouring Marlena's glass for her. As rough around the edges as he was, Shen was not a man without manner's and grooming. He just chose to not follow rather obtuse social trends.
He then poured his own and relaxed some, smiling a little at her suggestion.
"Well yes. I've had my fill of travel. If it's not the constant smell of the sea it's the dust on the roads and quite frankly, I hope to turn a profitable business here in Wistvale. Providing there's a market for it, of course."
Watching his every move, Marlena studied Shen, working out about him what she could from his actions. When the glass was filled, she reached for it, her fingers not grasping it, but running over the edge, brushing the rim while she listened.
I was given a chance here and I took it to avoid moving onto some other town. After a while they are merely copies of others I have been to.
Wistvale is different, in a good way. You are left alone for the most part, so long as you do not step on the toes of others or take part in something particularly offensive. I see no reason why you couldn't set up shop here. What sort of business is it you plan on?
Shen watched her with like interest and only took small sips of his own wine. He wasn't in the habit of confiding everything in someone he'd only just met, but he had decided that Marlena was to his liking and, if his hunch served correct; might also share like interests with him.
"Well. Without going into terrible detail, I suppose I could start a medical practice here."
