Rue's answer almost conviced Venom. He was happy that she tried again. His eyes looked at Rue.
There is much you don't know about me and to why I cannot have inner peace. A lifetime of evil cannot be forgotten that easily. It was the way of my people. I learned a valuable lesson in that first mission, which I would not realize until many years after. Because of her I am the person I am now. My mission in life now is to bring peace to this planet at whatever cost. I will die trying, that is my word.
He then turns to Zaedus.
Do you believe one can be forgiven for the numerous innocent lives he's taken?

Kerag listened carefully, and chose to keep his thoughts to himself for the moment as his brother Venom spoke with the others. He was drunk, but not ignorant of the seriousness of the tale. It made sense to him now why the red-headed swordsman was so tenacious. Looking back at their duel, things began to make more sense...
The orc smoked his pipe, red smoke lingering about his countenance as he finally interjected on Venom's question.
"Zaedus may have his own opinion on this, but I believe it is a question of whether or not you can forgive yourself. If you cannot, ask what you must do to prove to yourself atonement. If you do not know the answer to this, then you must do what you can...for as long as you can...until one day you know you've redeemed yourself, if not in other peoples eyes, than at least your own. Those eyes which judge you the most are your own...I know this all too well brother Venom."
He dragged from the pipe again, body completely relaxed in his chair.
Rue nodded at Kerag's statement, agreeing with what he said and unable to find any further words. She drank from her cup silently, looking at the ground and thinking about Venom's story, only guessing at what else he had done during his lifetime in a society so twisted.
Kerag understood Venom. There was so much he had to do in order to forgive himself. He stood up and placed his hand on Kerag's shoulder.
Exactly my thoughts, brother Kerag... Now if you will all excuse me, it is getting late and the room is beginning to spin. Hehe. I best be going to bed before I make more of a fool of myself. Goodnight to all.
Venom heads to the stairs of the tavern, walking left and right and grabbing on to whatever he could to not fall down before stopping half ways.
Rue... I do beleive I owe you another tale for trying to answer my question... twice... If you don't have any plans, how about we go for a walk tomorrow after I get off from guard duty?
Without waiting for a response, Venom makes his exit.
Rue exhaled between clenched teeth. She took a long sip from her drink and set her glass on the table.
"I'll give you the short version. I hated my father, my father hated me, I ran away from home after killing my sister, turned cold while on the run, and ended up here sitting with all of you."
Picking up her drink again and taking another long sip, she kept her eyes on her companions. "But enough depression for one night, right?
"The guard, hm? I'm not quite sure I'm cut out for that job," Rue said with a laugh. "As for what I do now, absolutely nothing. I still have leftover money from when I left home, but that won't last me forever. Maybe I should join the guard... what does that entail, exactly?" She was only partially joking back, doubting she would join the guard (even if she could) but was genuinely interested in the duties of the guard, besides, of course, protecting the town.

Kerag laughed with her, puffs of red smoke drifting up with every chuckle till a red cloud hovered above him. He rubbed his chin, thinking how best to either inform or persuade her into joining. After all, they were really under staffed at the moment. The orc opened his eye and he smirked.
"Ah jobless I see..." Kerag paused a moment and then continued, "Maybe you should indeed. Pay is by commission. Catch criminals and contraband, and you get rewarded accordingly."
He leaned forward making eye contact with Rue, humor in his eye but also a hint of seriousness.
"Whatever your talents, the guard could use them for something I'm sure. We have daily patrols, training regiments a few days a week, depends on who is drilling you, and there is an official law code printed at the Council Hall which we abide and enforce."
Kerag smiled.
"You'd start off as a recruit of course, not an official guard till your two weeks probation and training. After taking the S.R.T you'll have attained Guard Status and Wistvale's trust to keep her safe. For all the hierarchy, we are actually a tight group of friends and co-workers trying to do some good. And believe me, if you're bored, join the guard and you won't be for long..."
Kerag chuckled, thinking it an understatement.

"Honestly, never really been one to follow the law. But this town is my last hope, so that might have to change. I'll consider it," she said with a smile.
"Oh, I meant captain. I mean, uh..." She shook her head. "Anyway, I'll think about it. But it's getting quite late, I think I'll be heading out. It was nice meeting and speaking to you both," she said with a smile to both Kerag and Zaedus. "Good night!" She made her way out of the Tavern.
