(Gonna wind this forward a little so everyone can decide what happens next when they get on.)
The parrot and the heavily accented man explain everything. Yes, they do have a permit, yes it's been registered with the council and the paper is a form of safe currency that is used here. You exchange gold for it on the way in, your exchange gold for it on the way out. It is useless outside this business so it deters thieving. Apparently it's all the rage elsewhere. All participants are paid for winning and no one is forced to fight, it's crude but all above board.
Now comes the interesting part. The parrot and the man with the funny voice who is still convinced Marg is an abusive hooker, explain that anyone can fight in the ring, whether in a group or solo and the patrol is invited to join.
The crowd responds to the suggestion VERY favorably. On one hand, you're all on patrol. On the other hand, kicking their best fighter's asses would really go a ways to get some respect for the town guard in a couple of ways - you'd be more approachable to the average Joe AND you'd be known to hold your own.
And then.... there's the cash.
The group can choose as many or as few fighters as they want for what will be the last fight of today. 1 through 5, here's the winnings.
1 - $50. 2 - $110. 3 - $170. 4 - $230. 5 - $300.
After that fight and providing their selection wins... well they can have a shot at the title.
Zaedus took in the information with a grain of salt, however he remained vigilant. Things have been moving quite a bit since his journey. The thought of improving the guard in the people's eye however did pique his interest. Contested combat was always a favorite for him. Since apparently it was approved for them to take part in this combat he turned to the other two Guard members.
So....who wants to partake in the sport and solidify our names and garner an honored reputation for the Guard? I for one am interested in this.
He stated slightly dropping his usual stoic tone and nature, replacing it with a bit of excitement. it had been a long while since he had a taste of real combat.
Zaedus was somewhat surprised by Margrett's response, he figured her a battle ready warrior, not someone easily willing to forgo a challenge.
If you so wish, but for the townsfolk already here and some in the line in which we stand, you can show them, assuming you care, that you just up and leave if something does not appeal to you. To me that seems an appropriate message to send
Zaedus said, knowing his comment was condescending, he had hoped she would take the bait and join in.
This is simply a bout of strength, and what better way to prove ourselves to the public than this. If I were in the people's boots and I saw the town guard proving themselves and winning the challenges at hand I would feel safer with them about knowing they are dedicated in their training and commitments. The people here are still wary of the council and it's dealings since this town had no previous ordered guidance, this could prove to ease that wariness.
I see your point, and valid it may be the money we get here can be re-directed to the town. It could fund new organizations, maybe help those in need.
He laughed a bit.
Call me a bit over zealous on my approach here on honoring this town. Hell, even call me a fool for having high hopes, but none the less I still stand firm in my belief. I will not force you into it, all I ask is to lend your blade.

After Margrett turned Gray down on his challenge the other day, her decline didn't surprise him too much. Besides the fighting ring looked much more entertaining than standard patrol. Battle! This is what Kerag lived for!
"I don't know about you Captain, but that description fits me adequately." Kerag said, unable to keep himself from laughing as he turned to Captain Zaedus, his lips spread in a grin from ear to ear.
"Let us bring honor and respect to the Town Guard, Captain Zaedus! I've been itching to use my new weapon..." The axe on his back had a perfect gleam to its edge, never used before. "It's time I break it in."
His glowing red eye shifted to Venom, sardonic and full of enthusiasm. "How about it Venom? I know this must appeal to you." His voice was grumbled, but clearly excited.
Venom grins at the orc. He thrives for competition, always wanting to better himself. This fight could prove to his superiors how well he fought as a teamate. He turned to look at Marg.
With Captain Mikael's permission, I'd love to partake in this challenge. Venom was anscious to get her approval being that they were on patrol and she was in charge.
